';FACT: Out of 600 octagerians(people who live to be 100 or older)studied...not a single vegetarian out of them...not 1';
somebody in a recent post said this, the poster will remain nameless to protect his identity. i just want to know if this is true. i am a vegan, and i've always been told vegans have the potential to be healthier and live longer than the average human (and possibly evolve into an angel-like creature--but that is for another question). anyway, is this true or is that poster full of BS???Is this true i hope not?
He's full of it (and I TD'd him%26lt;g%26gt;) but he is attempting to reference one particular study (the 600 is the clue).
I don't remember the name of the study but it was carried out in NY,NY and was strictly based on a genetic study of longevity in Ashkanazi Jews. It had NO significance towards anything even remotely related to dietary choices on health and/or longevity. The researchers were hoping to find a lifespan gene! He got the Octogenarian part right, there were folks that made it to 100 but there were many that didn't. The study focused on folks making it past 80.
Who knows? Ashkanazi plus vegan might equal 200 year lifespans%26lt;g%26gt;!Is this true i hope not?
doesn't octa-- means eight? as in eighty year olds
No I wouldn't trust some random statistic.
HOWEVER, if there was a study that stated this, it would most likely be a bit biased simply b/c the generation of individuals currently in there 80's (not 100's...eesh) is not one that typically buys into the vegetarian lifestyle. That generation was raised through wars, the depression, and were raised to eat everything on their plate. Social studies of current trends that involve older individuals usually are a tough one b/c it is a completely different mindset.
That being said, I think it is a bit narrow-minded to assume that simply b/c you are a vegan/vegetarian that you are healthier than those that eat meat. In fact, vegans have a much harder time getting all the nutrients their bodies need b/c of the absence of meat proteins in their diets.
Vegans and Vegetarians are often judged unjustly, but you should ALSO be careful not to make assumptions about people that eat meat.
Hope that helps. :o)
I was a vegetarian (mostly junk food vegetarian) for 20+ years and survived cancer. My sister is a meat eater and she survived cancer..
The point in common is genetics. Genetics is not a small factor in your quality and quantity of life.
People can say anything...if there was no link or reference to back it up, then let it go or try to google it...but don't take everything you hear as fact.
If I am studying 600 people over the age of 80, who are meat eaters, than I could make that statement also. I have personally met many people over the age of 80 who have never eaten meat, travel to India and you will also.
I have met a few who have never eaten any animal products.
The Jain religion is one of the oldest in the world, and holds veganism as one of its highest beliefs. Many Jains live to be older than 80.
I also know many people who died before 50 who preferred their meals with meat.
We can phrase things in many ways to make an argument strong. The listener must learn to see through the verbage, and add his/her knowledge to the phrasology to get the truth behind the words.
A shot of whiskey a day, and church on Sunday. That's it, baby.
octa means 8. So, I think that this poster opinion is already flawed in the first 4 words, I wouldn't put too much thought in the rest of the statment.
And even if the poster's quote has some truth too it, think about it, 100 years before today in 1908, how many people do you think considered themselves vegetarians? Not many.
Now you can't be sure what thier diet consisted of, it could have been mostly vegetables and only the occasional meat. But maybe they just didn't call themselves vegetarians.
And if it IS true (which I seriously doubt) All I have to say is, '; Only the Good Die Young'; :) lol
Oh and a vegan lifestyle is Not unhealthy and unatural, maybe some (one) of these posters should know what they are talking about before they answer.
Its BS, but there is a problem. Go here http://www.healthfreedomusa.org/index.ph鈥?/a>
and watch the codex video. they will kill us all if something isnt done. Note that the codex is the brain child of a genuine nazi war criminal. His factory produced the gas they used on the jews.. and he's in charge of your food supply, health care and soon everything else.
Yes, but who wants to live to 100 if you have major health issues? Quality of life counts for a lot, not just quantity. Those 100 year olds cited in the study you read could be in very poor health and suffering.
Being over 100 is not average though.
Only 2.8 of the population of the world is vegetarian, so a statistic of only 600 octagenarians is a useless figure. Vegetarianism is not just about living longer, but living better. As for evolving into an angel like creature, its what you do with your time ON the earth that counts-however long you live. Being a veggie is a responsible thing to do-I am sure the countless animals we save think we are angels already
As for the debate vegetarian vs omnivor vs carnivore vs fruitatarian vs breatharian etc. It is more silly politics than fact.
Everyone is different. Some people have a high requirement for animal protein, others actually get sick from it. The explorer Stephanson ate only meat and cured his cancer. Other Cancer victors remove meat, and they get rid of their cancers. No one knows where Humans came from. Some say Adam and Eve, some say Aliens, some say from starfish (really, there is such a theory, nothing to do with SpongeBob). We have to listen to our own inner voices and our bodies. we must be our own doctors and our own nutritionists.
I know a heavy laborer who does not eat meat, just Kale sandwiches for lunch. He is strong as an ox and never gets sick. I know people who just eat raw meat and never get sick and are strong as oxes (and act like them, excuse the analogy).
I personally have tried it all, raw vegetarian, fermented raw vegetariann, junk food veg, raw food all carnivorous and I am still searching. None yet have made me strong and invincible...except lately I discovered juicing Kale (mixed with some grapes or apple). I must admit that raw green drink (fresh) make me feel wonderful. I have actually begun to do my own landscaping again. So Kudos for Kale!
TO PUT LIGHT ON THE DEBATE ABOUT THE WORDING ';OCTAGENARIANS';. MAYBE THE STUDY BEGAN WHEN THE PEOPLE WERE 80 AND CONTINUED UNTIL THEY WERE 100, THEN IT WOULD BE ACCEPTABLE TO SAY OCTAGENAARIANS, AND WOULD LEND SOME CREDIBILITY TO THE STUDY.
Obviously if none or nearly none of the people in the region were vegetarian originally, none of them would be 100 years later. I remember reading the story and the place is in the NY region I believe. I don't think that many people there 100 years ago really knew about vegetarianism much less were one. That would be like saying none of them were Muslim, because I doubt there were any (or many) Muslim there 100 years ago.
The number of people studied is pretty regional and low.
Go to where there are vegetarians and look at the statistics.
Wow never heard that
its bs, i don't have to finish reading it
i'm tried of defending something for nothing
so i'll just say i bet 1 trillion dollars, vegetarians and vegans will have higher life span over meat eaters
vegetarians and vegans will out live the meat eaters, too many diese in meat that just pass on to man, so yea
and i'm not a vegetarian because i want to life to 100
i want to live to 35
you're right
vegans are much healthier
(unless they're the kind who just eat potato chips %26amp; sit on the couch all day.)
who the hell wants to live to be 100 anyways?
THIS IS FALSE ..and ridiculous.. example ..http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/-chinas-ha鈥?/a>
China's happy vegetarian turns 120
Listed in the Guinness World Records as the oldest living person, a Chinese woman has marked her 120th birthday.
Celebrating her birthday Saturday with dozens of relatives and locals in the city of Leshan, Sichuan province, Du Pinhua said she has been vegetarian for her whole life, China Daily reported Wednesday. there are many more .. but just for fun how about a vegan dog too ...Many vegetarians and vegans feed healthful, meatless diets to their companion animals. One remarkable example is that of Bramble, a 27-year-old border collie whose vegan diet of rice, lentils, and organic vegetables earned her consideration by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world鈥檚 oldest living dog in 2002.
Well there are a lot more meat-eaters in the world so naturally you would expect meat-eaters to be prevalent in any count. Also you can tell by the way you feel physically that not eating meat is healthier; you don't feel so bogged down after eating fruit and veggies.
I can't speak for the truth of the statistic, but I can tell you part of the quote is wrong. An octogenarian is someone who is in their eighties. A person who lives to 100 is called a centenarian. So I would doubt the validity of the whole quote, enough to look up the statistics myself. I'm sure any vegan website could link you to them.
You are looking too hard at the food. It's what's behind the lifestyle that does not help vegans live to an old and moldy age.
What I mean is Vegans are generally more stressed out because their lifestyle is much harder to maintain than your average meat eater or even vegetarian. Vegans get criticized more often because they are easy targets, it's harder to find food, especially depending on where you live. If you are or became Vegan for a specific reason, that reason may be in your mind everyday, somewhere, just looming. It's all stress. And it is proven that stress does help you die a little sooner, if you don't learn how to control it somehow. So I don't think it's the food as much as it's the stress. But, you definitely don't get all the different nutrients you need being Vegan. (Of course your average fast food eating American does not get the nutrients they need either!)
Vegetarian diets that include milk/egg are healthy. The vegan diet is decidedly unnatural and unhealthy. But, such Earth Muffin fads as the vegan diet are sorta like Nature's way of adding a little extra chlorine to the gene pool, if you know what I mean.
Meat and fish contain nutrients that are essential to the human body. Human beings have canine teeth that are designed to tear meat.
A balanced diet of a small portion of meat, larger servings of vegies, fruits and whole grains, and a tiny amount of oils/fat will keep you healthy and slow down the body's ageing process.
Moderation in all things is key. And yes people who eat meat in moderation do live longer.
We are omnivores. Vegans are not healthier and will not live longer. Quite the opposite.
Too bad for you, to have bought into the P.C. liberal guilt trip.
the human body was designed to eat meat and vegetables , teeth alone are proof of this ,
i think you need mental help please seek soon
